β€œWe loved working with designLAB! They were thoughtful, responsive and visionary. Thanks to them Providence Public Library has been completely transformed into an inspiring space for the city and the state of Rhode Island.”
— Jack Martin, Executive Director

designLAB completed the renovation of the century-old wing of the Providence Public Library in 2013, working in partnership with the Library and Russell Morin Hospitality Solutions. Today, the Providence Public Library rents its magnificent spaces for corporate meetings, exhibitions, weddings, receptions, and a vast number of community celebrations, adding to the vibrancy, culture, and economy of downtown Providence.

designLAB worked closely with the Trustees and Events Coordinator to develop a design that uniquely fits their innovative vision for achieving PPL’s public service mission: to nurture and enhance the educational, historical, and cultural fabric of Rhode Island. The renovation not only enhances the building as a cultural asset, but also leverages its appeal as an economic driver for the city and region.

The new and expanded program use required extensive updates to meet current life safety codes. A fire sprinkler system was installed throughout the historic building, with pipes and heads discreetly concealed behind the plaster ceilings, coffers, and ornament.  Plaster artisans repaired moldings deteriorated by water damage or destroyed during previous projects, restoring the Library’s interior to its original brilliance.

In the Grand Hall, ineffective strip lighting was removed in favor of vintage style globe pendants that showcase the ceilings and fit the period. Archways were reopened around the arcade, and fresh paint with gold accents add to the drama of the plasterwork, previously obscured by an all-white palette. The tired carpeting was replaced with limestone to complement the marble mosaic floors, providing a more durable surface for dining and large gatherings. The Grand Hall is open for casual browsing and reading during library hours, but is a most dramatic setting for a party.

Since its completion, the Library hosts over 150 events annually, having been ranked #3 in Conde Nast Traveler’s list of most beautiful wedding venues in the US. It generates an average of $400,000 in revenue each year, enabling the Providence Public Library to expand upon its services and impact throughout the City of Providence.
